چکیده

An imaging study of the bipolar nebula Frosty Leo is presented. In particular, we have studied the effects of spatial distribution of H2O ice on the circumstellar environment. Using the Keck telescope with the NIRC infrared camera, we have recovered images at a wavelength of 3.08 μm within the prominent (attenuation of about 5 mag) water-ice absorption band, and in the adjacent quasi-continuum at 1.6 μm, 2.2 μm, and 3.3 μm. While the well-known bipolar structure appears quite symmetrical in all quasi-continuum images, the Northern lobe seems to be almost totally extinguished (by a factor of > ∼10) compared to the Southern one in images at 3.08 μm. This suggests a much greater concentration of ice between the observer and the Northern lobe. The question of the physical structure of the nebula has been addressed with the use of numerical radiative transfer simulations which have been able to reproduce the general behavior of the images and of earlier spectral data. From this, we deduce and/or confirm several parameters of interest: the typical dust grain size, the dust density distribution in the envelope, and the abundance of water ice. Models were produced with physically symmetrical lobes in which some one-sided extinction was produced by an effect related to the observer’s viewing angle. However, in order to reproduce the extreme extinction observed, more complicated scenarios, involving asymmetry with respect to the plane of the disk, were needed. Additional imaging observations were conducted at 2.26 μm (where the system is bright) with the intent to recover high-angular-resolution information. Data sets consisted of one hundred of rapid-exposure data frames from which images were recovered using a shift-and-add algorithm. Although these images did contain structures at the diffraction limit of the telescope (∼50 milliarcsec), no evidence for binarity as reported by Roddier et al. (1995) from adaptive optical studies was found within the dynamical range obtained.

The structure and momentum of multiple collimated outflows in the protoplanetary nebula Frosty Leo

We have discovered multiple jet-like features in the inner regions of the protoplanetary nebula (PPN) Frosty Leo, in optical images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Frosty Leo is only the second PPN (after CRL2688) and the first oxygen-rich one, to show well-focussed jets close to the equatorial plane. The nebula consists of two bright compact structures embedded inside two large tenuo...

The disrupted molecular envelope of Frosty Leo ,

We present maps of CO emission in the protoplanetary nebula Frosty Leo. Observations of the rotational transitions 12CO J = 2−1 and 1–0 have been obtained with the IRAM interferometer and the OVRO array. The molecular envelope of Frosty Leo is found to be complex and compact; most of the gas extends <∼6′′ and shows a structure that is very different to the extended optical nebula. It is compose...

Near-infrared speckle imaging and AO polarimetry of the bipolar proto-planetary nebula

IRAS 09371+1212 is an oxygen-rich post-asymptotic giant branch (postAGB) star with an hourglass-like bipolar proto-planetary nebula (PPN), and has been well studied since its discovery because of several interesting peculiarities. It is also known as Frosty Leo because its unique, strong peak at 60 μm in the IRAS photometry was initially proposed to be due to emissions from water ice which cond...

Microstructural and geochemical perspectives on planktic foraminiferal preservation: Glassy versus Frosty

[1] In recent years it has become apparent that the ‘‘cool tropic paradox’’ of Paleogene and Cretaceous ‘‘greenhouse’’ climates arises because of the diagenetic alteration of tropical planktic foraminiferal calcite near the seafloor, yielding artificially high dO values. Because the Mg/Ca compositions of foraminiferal and inorganic calcite are thought to be quite different, Mg/Ca measurements s...

Screening Eight Cultivars of Alstroemeria Cut Flower for Vase Life and Biochemical Traits

Alstroemeria is one of the most popular cut flowers in European Union owing to its postharvest longevity and broad color spectra. Nevertheless, premature wilting decreases the aesthetic value of flowering branches even before the opening of the secondary florets in the fluorescence. The present study evaluated different biochemical and morphological traits of Alstroemeria cut ...
